National Ice Cream Day We'd like to thank all our supporters who coordinated dairy-free ice cream give-aways during National Ice Cream Month. The events were a really fun way of promoting yummy vegan products and the many lactose-intolerant people who stopped by were thrilled to find a dessert they could eat without suffering nasty after-effects.
Vegan Basics tells you all you need to know about animal-free shopping, eating and cooking.
The Despair of Dairy Cows Viva! supporter Marasian worked tirelessly to rescue a male dairy calf who was destined for slaughter. Pono (Hawaiian for 'Peace') will now spend his days in 5 acres of grassy luxury. Luckily, this not-so-little-now calf had a happy ending, but others are less fortunate.
Dairy cows are forced to give birth over and over again to keep their milk supply flowing. Their calves are taken away just days, or sometimes hours, after birth. Female calves are forced into a life of slavery in dairy herds. The males, unable to produce milk, are either shot, or raised for "milk-fed veal". To stop their muscles developing so that their flesh stays soft, they are raised, and often tethered by the neck, in crates that are just two feet wide.
